Dragonflies keeps on strucking people's imagination. How can they be so popular and loved by so many people around the world? What is their magic?

 

Yes, magic.... Dragonflies have always been associated with the good, positive side of magic. They look so shining and sparkling.... Their body has a sort of mother-of-pearl look and reflects the light with its million colors. And the wings are iridescent too and so bright and resplendent as to shine in the sky.

 

But it is the miracle of their dual-life, their living in two different  realms during two distinct periods of their life which makes them so fascinating. Their eggs are laid in the water, and in the water the larva grows and lives. But then, the dragonfly emerges from the water into the sky, for a totally new life. This is what makes it so special. It's a clear symbol of transformation, of rebirth, of improvement. It's the "getting into the light". Does it represent a life after death? Yes, for some cultures and for some people, who see in them the transfiguration of a body from an "heavy" and low environment, to a "light" and "high", wonderful new world, full of opportunities and freedom. Sadly enough, this phase of dragonflies' life lasts very little compared to the period they live in water which can be from few months for smaller dragonflies up to five years for larger ones, while their life as flying insects lasts only up to four months. When ready, the larva reaches the water surface, the old skin breaks and a new adult insect with amazing colors emerges.

 

Probably for the majority of the people dragonflies symbolize the inner beauty which we all can show, but only if we really want to. They represent a sort of self-awareness we achieve when we are ready and thanks to which our soul (our inside ego) can spread joy and light. Most of all they represent the freedom of being able to change, to improve, to get self esteem and maturity.
